jean-paul beaubier. ‘northstar’. 21. a mutant from quebec with the gift of superspeed, flight, and light generation. jean-paul's biological parents died in a car accident when he and his sister were only infants, and a mishap in the foster care system resulted in jean-paul and his twin being tragically separated. jeanne-marie went to a strict catholic family that sent her away to a boarding school for much of her life, while jean-paul went to the martins, a middle-class family who raised jean-paul to the age of eight. when they, too, died in a freak accident, jean-paul was swept back into the foster care system, bouncing around from home to home until he ran away at age twelve, and was later informally adopted by raymond belmonde, a small business owner with a soft heart for runaways and broken things. he channeled the adolescent jean-paul's anger and abandonment issues into constructive outlets — skiing and acrobatics, which he excelled at — which also helped the boy learn to control his burgeoning mutation. jean-paul was later recruited by the canadian government's department of defense branch for the formation of their own government-sponsored superhero team, alpha flight, which he was lured into by being reunited with the sister he never knew he had. department h would quickly come to regret this decision; jean-paul is a loose cannon, his sister is nuts, and neither of them can stand being told what to do. jean-paul is a walking stereotype, a smug, swaggering little prick and a french-canadian separatist who despises all things anglo and thinks he's better than everyone else... but he's damn good at what he does, and alpha flight needs him and his sister.
